About Newton International Fellowships

These fellowships are for non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK.

 

This scheme is currently open to applications. The submission deadline has been extended to Wednesday 8 April 2020 to accommodate any challenges facing applicants in light of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

 

This scheme is jointly run by the British Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Royal Society.

 

Research must be within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. For a full list, please see the breakdown of subject groups and areas supported by the Royal Society.

 

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply you must:

 

* have a PhD, or will have a PhD by the time the funding starts
* have no more than 7 years of active full time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry)
* be working outside the UK
* not hold UK citizenship
* be competent in oral and written English
* have a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial research proposal agreed with a UK host scientist

What is the scheme’s value and tenure?

 

The Newton International Fellowships provide funding for two years, covering:

 

* subsistence, at a fixed rate of £24,000 per annum
* research expenses
* relocation expenses
* contribution to overheads at UK Host Organisation

 

Successful applicants may also be eligible to receive annual funding following completion of their fellowship to support networking activities with UK-based researchers.

 

How do I apply for this scheme?

 

Applications for the humanities and social sciences should be made to the British Academy.

 

Applications for clinical and patient oriented research should be made to the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Currently there is one round per year which opens in January.

 

What is the application process?

 

Applications for the natural and physical sciences should be submitted through the Royal Society’s grants management system Flexi-Grant®.

 

Your application will go through the process detailed on the Making a grant application page overseen by the Newton International Fellowships Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences Panels.

Newton Fund and private fellowships

 

We welcome applications from all countries. Our partnerships with other funding bodies and institutions allow us to fund additional awards to applicants from specific partner countries.

 

It is not possible to apply directly for one of these fellowships. Eligible candidates will be selected from the shortlisted Newton International Fellowship applications.

 

Newton Fund partner countries

 

These Fellowships are supported through the Newton Fund, which forms part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance commitment. More information about the Newton Fund.

 

Private funding for Chinese nationals

 

The Sino-British Fellowship Trust and the K.C. Wong Education Foundation provide the Royal Society with funding to support scientists in the Newton International Fellowship.
